Beach Comb

Beachcoming For Inspiration

In this task i will list and explain to a number of videos how they have inspired me. This will not only give me more idea's for my own music video; but will show there's no video thats the same and there's no shame in having a video thats different to others.

Jessie J - Who You Are

I have chosen this music video "Who You Are" by Jessie J, as it is a very meaningful song and just by listening to it, you're able to understand every single word. Unlike other music videos, this video does not have a million and one effects, with background dancers and singers. Instead, it's Jessie in the center of the screen singing from the heart.

The music video begins with a mid shot, looking straight at Jessie. The lighting is quite dark, which can signify hidden emotions, secrets and doubts from the singer. At 0:41 seconds, Jessie says "I nearly left the real me, on the shelf", by reading between the lines, i can understand Jessie was trying to become something she was not, trying to please other people instead of herself. This was the first line that inspired me as i was able to relate to this, it had a lot of feelings hidden underneath the lyric and i was able to tell this was song was going to be emotional.

At 0:48 seconds in the video, again its a mid shot with Jessie on the left corner of the screen. She is positioned tightly folded on her bed looking insecure. This scene is highly powerful as it can say a lot; considering the fact Jessie is not in the center of the screen can signify she was not in with the "crowd" or "cool kids" when she was younger. It seems she feels lonely and by herself. Again this was able to inspire me as it shows even the most successful people had to go through a struggle to have the life they wanted. It was not just one straight line of success, and they had to work hard for what they got. This was able to give me the strength to want to work harder for what i want in life and not to let anything get in my way.

At 0:54, Jessie says "seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing.. it's OK not to be OK" this lyric is again very inspiring. This can mean in life your able to see many successful and perfect people. You would think everything in their life is simple and easy; but nobody knows what happens behind closed doors. This was inspiring as it shows your not the only one that may have down days or feel to give up.

This music video all together, is inspiring to me because it shows the real Jessie and how she feels. At 1:13, it is a close up shot of her face, as she says "just be true to who you are" this can show even if you feel things go wrong in your life and people are not who they seem; you can get through it just by being yourself.

The whole music video itself, does not include fancy cars, girls in bikini's or men topless. It does not follow codes and conventions of an RnB or POP song, its bland and simple of just Jessie's J's face, and her own talent in front of the screen. It shows real emotions, e.g. at 3:08, rain begins to fall in a bedroom, this may be confusing, though it can indicate upset feelings, when your crying and there's no way out, Jessie repeats again "just be true to who you are" at the end, to keep reminding you the real facts.

Mariah Carey - Hero

I personally believe this music video  has a lot of meaning to it and can inspire many people if  they listen to it properly.

It had inspired me as i was able to understand the lyrics sang my Mariah Carey; the video was live with only four background singers with her. I think the meaning behind the lyrics is to t he people who always feel they are hopeless at everything, they see successful people who are flawless at what they do and believe they're unable to compete; however, by just looking in the mirror you are able to change everything about yourself that you didn't even know.

"Look inside you and be strong, and your finally see the truth, that a hero lyes in you"  This is an inspring lyrics to everyone that does not believe in themself. It can show you don't need to be the most intelligent person, or confident; all you need to do is believe in yourself and you can achieve anything.

Not only to myself, many people can  listen to this song and feel uplifted; it has a nice relaxing rhythm to it; it's a simple type of track that many people are able to listen to before they go to bed. This inspired me as i personally think songs that your able to relax to are the most popular songs.

R Kelly - I Believe I Can Fly

The song "i Believe I Can Fly" by R Kelly is a very inspirational song to me personally. It's emotional as i relate it to past experiences with people who have passed away.

The line "i believe i can fly" personally means to me, i am able to still see the people who have left me by looking up in the sky. It's able to bring me hope and joy by listening to the lyrics, which clearly shows the lyrics have emotion in them that not only just i am able to relate to.

The music video itself is also very uplifting and inspirational, at 3:35 in the music, it shows R Kelly in the semi of the center of the screen, looking up with his arms out. This can signify he;s reaching up to his dreams, the term "i believe i can fly" to him, can represent his positivity and belief in himself is so strong it feels as if he could fly. This specific scene, to me can signify someone looking up to people they feel to reach out to. It's inspiring as it shows life does go on, and all you have to do is look up.

Mary J Blige - No More Drama

This video can be inspiring to many people; in the video it screens a depressed man that is struggling to overcome drugs, a gang member who lost a friend in a shooting and a woman who is verbally and physically abused by her partner. These are all touching subjects towards different people; however it ends on positive notes that the gang member decides to end the cycle of killing by leaving his gang, the drug addict is seen to be heading for a rehab clinic to combat his addiction and the woman finding the strength to leave her abusive lover behind and start a new life.

These subjects are able to attract many audiences, they are able to be inspired by the actors choices and can understand they are not the only people going through these specific decisions. Although personally, i am not going through any of the subjects; i was able to understand how people feel when they are being abused, hurt, let down or taking drugs. It enables you to put yourself in their shoes and feel why its so difficult to perhaps leave a gang, or stop taking drugs.

Christina Aguilera - Beautiful

The music video opens with Christina saying "Don't Look Me" followed by scenes of her singing alone in a room intercut with self-image related sequences of other people, including; an anorexic girl examining herself in a mirror, eventually punching through it, a think teenage boy stands lifting weights ina room plastered with images of bodybuilders, and an African-American girl rips out pages of women's magazines including photos of only white women and throws them into a fire. In one sequence, a girl  is physically builled by several peers, and in another,a goth man sits at the back of a bus while several people get up and move. The video also touches on LGBT issues, one scene features a gay couple, kissing on a bench and ignoring the stares of people who pass them. Another shows a transgender person, putting on makeup, and women's clothing.

The song represents a lot of people's issues that they are struggling to get through, and shows a positive message that no matter who you are, how you act or what you look like; your still beautiful. This was inspiring as i believe i am not perfect, and this was able to show me i do not need to try and make myself look perfect to be myself.

This can be an inspiring song to many people who feel scared to come out as who they actually are; for example, in the video it shows an anorexic girl, she believes she is not beautiful as she looks like a "skeleton" and does not have the beautiful figure that she dreams of, this is able to relate to many girls that could watch the music video, and can change their mindset of their body, it can give them more confidence in themselves to believe they are beautiful, and that their body does not change their personalities and who they are.

It also shows a two men kissing each other, this is an issue that is always frowned upon; from religious people to just hating on gay people. Many men are afraid to "come out the closet" because of what people would think of them, which is why many people become depressed by the time their 30. However, this video can also give them the back bone to finally say they are gay and love their partner no matter where they are.

Another subject are transgenders, people always judge them before getting to know them. This leaves them feeling hopeless, and perhaps changing back to who they was when they was unhappy. The fact Christina Aguilera put this subject in her music video gave everyone who may frown upon transgenders, will make them realize they are still humans; who are not harming anybody but trying to find their inner self.

I have respect for the video and also the artist herself, for showing these subjects in the music video. It shows she is not against anybody; nor thinking she is better than anyone because of her popularity rate. It inspired me a lot as i now know i can be myself without having to cover up who i really am.
